Like most researchers, Andrew Ejike gets dressed and leaves his home at Enugu city in the morning. A computer laptop bag, which he carries like a suitcase, suggests he is going to the workplace. When he returns home from the evening, his neighbours often ask:”How was work today?” And he answers by saying,”Work was nice”.
Interestingly, Ejike does not have a job, and certainly does not have an official job. He is unemployed.
But he’s’created’ a’job’ for themself. He is, more or less, a ‘professional’ punter. Sports betting is what Ejike does and if he leaves ‘work’ every morning on working times, the’office’ he goes is really any sports bar around town.
On getting into the bar, Ejike would set up his laptop, connect to the Internet with a mobile device, open the web site of any of those cellular sports betting companies and start working on predictions, or permutations, so as to think of the bets he would place for your day.
A bachelor’s degree holder in Estate Management in a federal university, Ejike was sustaining himself and his young family with profits from sports betting after failing to secure a stable employment since he graduated more than 10 decades ago.
In a conversation with our correspondent, Ejike clarified he dropped two previous jobs following the companies that he was working for shut down.
“The pay in the jobs was not much anyhow but I believe there’s dignity in labor. I was also hoping that along the line I would get something bigger and more stable. But I could not even hold on to these tasks since the companies closed down and nothing better came together,” he explained.
